Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) is a Parastatal Organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. TAWIRI has the mandate to conduct, supervise and coordinate wildlife research in the United Republic of Tanzania. The Institute has its Headquarters in Arusha and four Research Centres namely, Njiro Wildlife Research Centre (NWRC) in Arusha, Kingupira Wildlife Research Centre (KWRC) in Selous Game Reserve, Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre (SWRC) in Serengeti National Park, Mahale-Gombe Wildlife Research Centre (MGWRC) in Mahale and Gombe National Parks respectively in Kigoma region.


TAWIRI invites applications from suitably qualified Tanzanian citizens to fill in various vacant positions as follows:

 


1. PRINCIPAL RESEARCH OFFICER (1 POSITION)
Qualification and experience

• Holder of a PhD degree or its equivalent qualification in Wildlife Science, Zoology, Biology, Botany, Veterinary Science or any related discipline in natural/social sciences from a recognized Institution.

• A research/field experience of not less than two years in wildlife or related field after PhD degree.

• Must have published at least three scientific publications in local and international journals after PhD degree.

• Report and proposal writing skills are an added advantage

• Must be a Tanzanian

Salary: PRSS 18/19 (Tshs 1,814,155 x 64,170/ 2,055,381 Fixed) per month depending on qualification and experience.
Main duties and responsibilities:

• Carrying out independent research

• Plan, develop, implement and coordinate TAWIRI research activities

• Supervision of TAWIRI projects as well as those being undertaken by visiting scientists

• Undertake training of both scientific and technical staff

• Participate in research of the Institute and dissemination of results in collaboration with other local and visiting scientists

• Preparing regular report on ongoing/completed research projects

• Participate in development and evaluation of research programmes of the Institute or research projects

• Perform any other duties assigned by the Director General

 

2. SENIOR RESEARCH OFFICER (4 POSITIONS)


Qualification and experience:

• A holder of MSc degree or its equivalent qualification in Wildlife Science, Zoology, Biology, Botany, Veterinary Science or any related discipline in natural/social sciences from a recognized Institution.

• A research/field experience of not less than four years in wildlife or related field after Masters Degree.

• Must have published at least two scientific publications in local and international journals after Masters Degree.

• Report and proposal writing skills are an added advantage

• Must be a Tanzanian

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Carrying out independent research

• Preparing regular report on ongoing/completed research projects


• Undertaking specific research projects

• Supervising on-going research projects and junior staff

• Participate in research of the Institute and dissemination of results in collaboration with other local and visiting scientists

• Participate in development and evaluation of research programmes of the Institute or research projects

• Raise funds for conducting wildlife research through development of sellable research proposals

• Must be prepared to work in remote areas including research Centres of the Institute

• Perform any other duties assigned by the Director General.

Salary: PRSS 14/15 (Tshs 1,054,821 x 35,200/ 1,182,843 x 38,720) or PRSS 16/17 (Tshs 1,346,013 x 44,000/ 1,526,254 x 83,582) per month depending on qualification and experience.


3. SENIOR VETERINARY RESEARCH OFFICER (TAWIRI-HERTA MESSERLI FOUNDATION VETERINARY PROGRAMME)
Qualification and experience:

• A holder of PhD/MSc degree in Veterinary Medicine/Science or related discipline from a recognized Institution.

• A field experience of not less than four years in Veterinary practice

• Experience in wildlife diseases, wildlife immobilisation/capture and translocation will be an added advantage

• Must have published at least two scientific publications in local and international journals after Masters Degree

• Must be a Tanzanian

Main duties and responsibilities:

• Surveillance/monitoring of wildlife diseases in protected and open areas

• Immobilisation of wildlife for researchers approved by TAWIRI


• Training of veterinary students on wildlife diseases, immobilisation and translocation

• Removal of wire snares from wildlife including wound management

Salary: A comprehensive remuneration package attached to this post during the project period is USD 1,000 per month. Employment will be on one-year contract, renewable upon completion of each contract and availability of funds.

CARNIVORE CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN CO-ORDINATOR

Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute is a Parastatal Organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. TAWIRI has a national mandate of carrying out, supervising and coordinating wildlife research in the United Republic of Tanzania.

TAWIRI, in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society wishes to recruit a suitable qualified candidate for the position of NATIONAL CARNIVORE CONSERVATION ACTION PLAN CO-ORDINATOR to work in the Tanzania Carnivore Monitoring Project. The successful candidate will be based at TAWIRI Headquarters at Njiro in Arusha, though a substantial amount of his/her time will be spent meeting with stakeholders throughout the country.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• Should hold at least a Bachelor of Science degree in either wildlife, zoology or natural resources
• Advanced writing skills and familiarity in use of computers, particularly internet and email, are essential.
• Report and proposal writing skills are an added advantage
• Ability to work with minimum supervision
• He/she must be a Tanzanian

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible to TAWIRI, the Project Manager, Project Leader, and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
• Oversee implementation of activities prioritized by the Tanzania Carnivore Conservation Action Plan.
• Develop a network of carnivore representatives from major stakeholder groups, and identify 'actors' to implement activities laid out by the plan.
• Maintain close communication with all actors, including regular meetings with wildlife authorities.
• Provide follow up on, and verification of, implementation activities.
• Compile and maintain a database of carnivore conservation activities relevant to the plan.
• Produce PR materials for encouraging further carnivore conservation activities and to disseminate information on existing activities.
• Act as a liaison for all carnivore conservation activities in Tanzania, helping to co-ordinate and to disseminate information.
• Produce informal monthly progress reports for project leader
• Manage project accounts and submit monthly reports to project leader.
• Any other duties assigned by the Director General, Project Manager and the Project Leaders

Qualification and experience:
• A holder of PhD or MSc degree or its equivalent qualification in wildlife biology and management or natural sciences from recognized Institutions.
• A good field experience of not less than eight years in scientific or research related field four of which should be at senior management position.
• Must have not less than a total of four publications in local and International journals.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Head the Centre.
• Advice the Director General on all matters related to the Centre.
• Promote and coordinate research within the Centre.
• Undertake research projects approved by the Institute.
• Provide administrative back-up for researchers under the Centre.
• Evaluate and recommend to the Institute applications for first issue or renewal of research clearance.
• Play a leading role in assessing research needs and possible funding sources.
• Take responsibilities for all financial transactions of the Centre.
• Keep an up to date inventory of wildlife research activities at the Centre.
• Establish a mechanism for planning, monitoring, controlling and coordinating wildlife research at the Centre.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the Director General.

2. CHIEF ACCOUNTANT (ONE POSITION)

Qualification and experience:
• A holder of a degree/Advanced Diploma in Commerce or Accountancy with a Certified Public Accountancy (T) (CPA) qualification or its equivalent.
• A working experience of not less than eight years four of which should be in a senior managerial level.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Head of Accounts
• Establish and maintain Accounts of the Institute in accordance with existing financial regulations.
• Responsible for all transactions and payments made to or for the Institute.
• Responsible for all accounting and financial records of the Institute and for ensuring that an adequate system of internal financial control is maintained.
• Responsible for preparing statement of assets and liabilities of the Institute.
• Responsible for formulating financial and accounting policies and procedures.
• Responsible for reviewing financial budget and cash flow of projects.
• Responsible for preparing financial accounts, submitting the accounts report for auditing and dealing with audit queries.
• Responsible for control and supervision of financial accounts of the Institute including proper recording, banking, credits and claims.
• Responsible for preparing statutory statements on accounts of the Institute.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director General.
• Age: A maximum of 45 years.

3. HEAD OF WILDLIFE EDUCATION AND INFORMATION (ONE POST)

Qualification and experience:

• A holder of PhD or MSc. in Education majoring in Biology, Zoology, Botany, Wildlife Ecology and Conservation or other natural sciences.
• A teaching experience and or knowledge in preparation and dissemination of educational materials such as leaflets, posters, newsletters etc. will be an added advantage.
• Must have a computer working knowledge.
• Working experience in public relations is an added advantage.

Duties and responsibilities:

• Initiate, design and undertake Education Projects and disseminate research findings.
• To translate scientific publications and reports into simple English and Kiswahili to benefit stakeholders.
• Develop an effective and integrated system of information dissemination regarding wildlife with a view to increasing public understanding and awareness of its value and importance.
• Liaise with research scientists on selection of materials suitable for dissemination.
• Prepare brochures, newsletters, posters and leaflets.
• Participate in organizing workshops, seminars, conferences and meetings for dissemination of research findings.
• Manage researchers’ database, library and information services.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the Director General.
• Age: Maximum 45 years.

TAWIRI, in collaboration with Zoological Society of London (ZSL) wishes to recruit a qualified candidate for the position of PROJECT COORDINATOR to work in the Tanzania Carnivore Monitoring Project which is funded by the Darwin Initiative of the UK Government. The successful candidate will be based at TAWIRI Headquarters at Njiro in Arusha, though a substantial amount of his/her time will be spent collating data from within and outside the country.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• Should hold a Msc. degree with at least 2 years of experience in either wildlife, zoology or natural resources management or Bsc. with at least 5 years of experience in a conservation/wildlife related post

• Knowledge in computers is essential
• Knowledge in Ms Access, GIS and Database management is essential
• Report and proposal writing skills is essential
• Ability to work with minimum supervision
• Fluent in both English and Swahili, other international languages, particularly French, will be an added advantage
• Experience in International conservation issues is essential

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responsible to the project Manager and the project leaders
• Collation of data, data entry, management and analysis
• Gather remote data within and outside the country and add to the Database
• Generate maps of data and collate relevant GIS layers
• Help organise a series of international regional meetings in Africa
• Assist in report writing
• Liaising with national and international project stakeholders and help in other aspects of the project
• Any other duties assigned by the project Manager and the project leaders
