TAWIRI - TANZANIA WILDLIFE
RESEARCH INSTITUTE - THE CITES SCIENTIFIC AUTHORITY IN ARUSHA, TANZANIA
LOCATION
The Kingupira Wildlife Research Centre is located in the Selous
Game Reserve (SGR), which covers 55,000 km2 (7o20' - 10o30' South and
36o00' - 38o40' East) in south-eastern Tanzania. It has been a World Heritage
Site since 1982 and is the largest Game Reserve in the savanna woodlands
areas in Africa, providing habitat that hold the largest population of African
elephant in the world. The Selous Game Reserve is about 320 km from Dar Es
Salaam which is only a one hour flight.
RESEARCH
The Kingupira Wildlife research Centre is the first and the only research
centre focusing on wildlife in the
Miombo woodlands in Tanzania.
It was formerly known as Miombo Research Centre (until 1980) and was
established in the late 1960's for research purposes in the Miombo woodlands.
" Miombo" is a Swahili word meaning 'woodlands dominated by Brachstegia spp.
and Julbernadia spp'. KWRC is responsible for all wildlife research carried
out in the Selous Game Reserve and other surrounding protected areas including
Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa National Park, Ruaha National Park, Rungwa
Game Reserve and Lumesule Game Controlled Area.

researchers at time.
