LOCATION

The Kingupira Wildlife Research Centre is located in the Selous Game Reserve (SGR), which covers 55,000 km2 (7o20' - 10o30' South and 36o00' - 38o40' East) in south-eastern Tanzania. It has been a World Heritage Site since 1982 and is the largest Game Reserve in the savanna woodlands areas in Africa, providing habitat that hold the largest population of African elephant in the world. The Selous Game Reserve is about 320 km from Dar Es Salaam which is only a one hour flight.

RESEARCH

The Kingupira Wildlife research Centre is the first and the only research centre focusing on wildlife in the African Elephant - Tanzania - TAWIRIMiombo woodlands in Tanzania. It was formerly known as Miombo Research Centre (until 1980) and was established in the late 1960's for research purposes in the Miombo woodlands. " Miombo" is a Swahili word meaning 'woodlands dominated by Brachstegia spp. and Julbernadia spp'. KWRC is responsible for all wildlife research carried out in the Selous Game Reserve and other surrounding protected areas including Mikumi National Park, Udzungwa National Park, Ruaha National Park, Rungwa Game Reserve and Lumesule Game Controlled Area.

CURRENT WILDLIFE RESEARCH

  • Wild dogs.
  • A survey on the black rhino population.
  • Studies on elephants and crop damage by elephants.


FACILITIES

  • Reliable water and power supply both in office and residential houses.
  • A herbarium and museum with many animal and plant specimens.
  • Twelve houses offering abundant accommodation for both local and foreign researchers including one rest house for visitors and guests and one house which can accommodate three researchers at time.
  • One vehicle.
  • One computer.
  • A laboratory.

FUTURE PLANS

  • To establish easier communication facilities with other centres.
  • To establish database for the available information.
  • To improve both water and power supply.
  • Renovation of the office buildings and houses.
  • To provide more accommodation for tourists and guests.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

  • Impact of opening roads to wildlife in the Selous Game Reserve
  • Biodiversity surveys on various taxa.
  • Monitoring of migration of elephants from Mozambique to Tanzania by use of satellite.
