TAWIRI - TANZANIA WILDLIFE
RESEARCH INSTITUTE - THE CITES SCIENTIFIC AUTHORITY IN ARUSHA, TANZANIA
LOCATION
Njiro Wildlife Research Centre is located within Arusha municipality
and is situated 5km South East of Arusha town on the slope of Njiro Hill,
4oS and 36oE. It is located at the same premises as TAWIRI headquarters.
RESEARCH
Njiro Wildlife Research Centre is the sole centre under TAWIRI and in
the whole Tanzania responsible for research on bees and beekeeping in
the country. NWRC is a centre for appropriate technology and information
on tropical bees and beekeeping. It occupies an area of 23 Ha out of
which 70 percent is reserved as unique Acacia forest where experimental
honeybee colonies are maintained in 13 small apiaries. Apart from the
main apiary at Njiro, the Centre also has three field stations in
different ecosystems; Mount Kilimanjaro (West) Rift Valley (Magugu)
and Tabora Research Station.
CURRENT RESEARCH
The research programmes include appropriate technology on bee keeping, bee
behaviour and management, diseases, pests and predators, extension and training,
and conservation and the environment.
