TAWIRI - Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute. Wildlife Research in Tanzania - Africa - TAWIRI



TAWIRI comprises of five Research Centres in various locations around the country. Each centre has its Director, who is answerable to the Director General of the Institute.

2. Kingupira Wildlife Research Centre (KWRC), located in Selous Game Reserve.

3. Mahale Wildlife Research Centre (MWRC), located in the Mahale National Park.

4. Njiro Wildlife Research Centre (NWRC), located in the Arusha Municipality.

5. Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre (SWRC), located in the Serengeti National Park.

In addition to these centres, there is a Conservation Information and Monitoring Unit (CIMU) that keeps all data and information on aerial censuses of wildlife.

FACILITIES

TAWIRI has a wildlife veterinary laboratory at Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre, the best of its kind in Africa, maintaining among others, a data bank for wildlife diseases in Tanzania. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Richard Hoare and assisted by Dr. Robert Fyumagwa.

TAWIRI also maintains at the Serengeti Wildlife Research Centre, a library with a multitude of publications on wildlife.

In August 2000 the Institute received a donation of an aircraft Cessna 182P to enhance its aerial animal count work. The aircraft was kindly donated by Professor Hideo Obara of Japan.
